As you can see, on the tabs above, an events calendar has been added to this blog.  To view the new calendar, simply click the 'Calendar' link above.  If the on-blog version seems a bit small, there is a link to a full-page version at the bottom of that page. I hope to make this a useful resource by adding wood carving events from all of Washington and our neighboring States.

Submit any missing events to me either by a comment here or through the FaceBook page.

Another new feature, which you may have noticed, is the "favicon" {favorite icon}.  I used an image of the traditional wood carvers mallet to create a favicon for the blog.  This icon should appear on the tab at the top of your browser and possibly in your Favorites or Bookmark list.

Overview
Our goal is to provide an informal forum for carvers, potential carvers and friends to gather and socialize, exchange carving techniques and ideas and to generally promote carving. Free, short (3-4 hours) classes will be offered as will a number of free, hands-on tutorial sites for “drop-ins” to sit down and actually carve or wood-burn, depending on the availability of presenters.

Spokane Wood Carvers 2012 Rendezvous

Spokane Wood Carvers will host our 11th annual Rendezvous at:
KOA Campgrounds
3025 N. Barker Road
Spokane Valley.

The rendezvous is 2 ½ days of fun, food, carving and friendship. A great list of instructors will offer classes at very minimal cost. The variety includes chip carving, relief caving, in-the-round, and woodburning (bring your woodburner). Public welcome - Come find out. A potluck will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and a barbeque at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. As always, the raffle will provide you with an opportunity to take home lots of valuable items. Tools and sharpening will also be available.

What are you carving?

I haven't been given a lot of instruction on how to use this blog but I figure I cannot go wrong posting anything about the club or it's members.  At least so long as carving is involved.  So I need to hear from some of you.  If you're carving something interesting, teaching a class, giving a demonstration, etc,,, send a couple of photos to me along with a short write up.  The more we post here the better to attract new members!

Speaking of photos! Here is a photo of Bob Gough "carving" some pecan logs with a log splitter.  All of the shavings and scrap were donated to a local non-profit for their winter heating needs.

Membership, Blogging, and FaceBook.

Hello!  My name is Butch Elrod and I have volunteered to take over as Administrator for this Blog.  I will be posting meeting minutes and other club business or announcements.  I also have some suggestions for changes or additions which I think would make this blog into a better resource for members and for the club.  For starters, I've opened a poll which you can answer on the right of this page. 

Membership Suggestion

It's generally to the benefit of any club to continually grow it's membership.  These days, just about anyone under the age of 50 expects to be able to buy anything they want online.  This includes club memberships.  If this club would like to offer membership through this blog, I can arrange that.  The most simple method would be to open a free PayPal account and offer both single purchase membership and subscription membership {automatic annual renewal} using a PayPal button(s).  Anything else the club sells {hats, tshirts, videos?} can also be sold and donations accepted online using PayPal. 

FaceBook Suggestion 

FaceBook has taken over the online social networking world and many small business have closed their business website in favor of a FaceBook account.  Not to sell from there but rather to promote and network.  It seems to me that if you're not using FaceBook, you're probably using flint tools to carve wood too.  ;-)  I think the Tri-Cities Woodcarving Club can use FaceBook for member networking and to attract new members. 

After looking at past blog postings, it seems the blog is used to report club business more than anything else. And that is what the blog is best suited for...  If the club officers want, or however is the correct way to decide this, I can open an Official Tri-Cities Woodcarving Club FaceBook group account.  Members can interact, post pictures, ask/answer questions, et cetera, et cetera.  A FaceBook presence would also make it easier for new or wannabe carvers to find the club.  Official club business can remain on the blog.
