Spokane Artistry in Wood, 28-29 Septemer, 2013


Spokane Carvers Association 
announced the twenty-fourth annual presentation of Artistry in Wood, a juried show of wood carvings with exhibits of wood turnings. The show is open to the public from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 28 and from noon to 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 29. It is being held in the gymnasium on the Salvation Army Campus at 222 E Indiana. Signs will direct visitors to parking and the entry door.

Admission is $5.00 per person; children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. Ads in the Inlander and flyers for the show will provide discounts.

Advance tickets are available from club members at $4.00 each.

The show is open to all carvers and usually has carvings from throughout the Northwest and Canada. 200 carvings were entered last year by novice, intermediate, advanced and expert carvers. Carvers may register their carvings on Friday September 27 between 3:30 and 6:30 pm for $5.00 each; carvers 16 and younger may enter the junior skill level for no charge. The registration fee for carvings, wood turnings and other wood working projects entered for exhibit only is $1.00.

Entries in the juried show are judged separately by skill level in 148 categories, 22 divisions and 6 sections: Waterfowl and Birds, Mammals and Fish, Human and Caricature, Special Types, Relief, and Native American Style.

Awards include first, second, third and honorable mention in each category. The judges’ choices will be awarded Best of Division, Best of Skill Level and Best of Show. The public will select People’s Choice and Happiest Holiday; carvers will select Carvers’ Choice; and various groups will award ribbons for Artistic Merit, Caricature Carvers of America, Pacific Northwest Caricature Carvers, and more.

Special events include a raffle (over 100 items last year), featured local Master carver John Flatt and carving demonstrations and advice.

Vendors will be present with carvings, tools, wood and supplies for sale.
