Yogi the STOLEN BEAR

Cropped from a much larger photo, this is the best picture we can muster of Yogi Bear which was STOLEN from a Kennewick, WA home.  Please contact Butch Elrod if  you see Yogi or know who has him.

Wood Caliber

A CNC machining company is making a *functioning* replica of the 1911 pistol using exotic woods.  These beautiful wood carving are made in pieces then assembled resulting in art  that partially functions like the real thing.  The slide, trigger, hammer, magazine release button, break-down pin all work.  It can be disassembled including removing the barrel.

The ebony model is difficult to distinguish from a genuine 1911.

Initiative 594 and "persons"

Section 2 (17) "Person" means any individual, corporation, company, association, firm, partnership, club, organization, society, joint stock company, or other legal entity.

What would it mean if the wood carving club were to suddenly become a legal "person"?  How does making our wood carving club a "person" keep guns out of the hands of criminals who are already forbidden from buying guns???

Show Promotion and Raffle Tickets!
This weekend, the Rattlesnake Ridge Riders hosted their 28th Chili Feed and Ride at Horn Rapids Park. Representatives from the Tri-Cities Woodcarving Association attended, as vendors, to promote the Artistry  in Wood show and to sell raffle tickets for the smoker.

The day started off with a little rain and the occasional breeze but eventually the weather turned more friendly. :) Ticket sales were good and quite a few people learned about the up coming show.

If you are interested in attending (or becoming a vendor at) this event next year, contact Joe Gauthier through their website here.

Dead Man's Hand

"Dead Man's Hand"
by Bob Gough

What is considered the dead man's hand card combination of today gets its notoriety from a legend that it was the five-card draw hand held by James Butler Hickok (better known as "Wild Bill" Hickok) when he was shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall on August 2, 1876, in Nuttal & Mann's Saloon at Deadwood, Dakota Territory. Reportedly, Hickok's final hand included the aces and eights of both black suits.

Extremely creative, you will be amazed at how real his carvings are:  a carved quilt that looks like a real quilt or a half eaten candy bar that a judge wants removed--his creativity and realism are what all wood carvers strive for.

How many carvings have you made?

Rocking Chair by MatthewTim
Timeless Sculptures

I have been working on a new website layout for a wood sculptor named Matthew G Welter.  Matthew has been a full time professional wood carver for over 40 years.  A few of those years were spent running his art gallery at Lake Tahoe, CA and his current studio (along with open air gallery) is in Carson City, Nevada.

Timeless Sculptures, as Matthew calls his company, is a primarily commission business.  Very little is carved for inventory and in recent years, much of his work requires heavy equipment to move or transport. Prices are equally weighty.

The question comes to mind, "What does a professional wood sculptor of this caliber do about cracking wood?"  The answer is found in his biography.  He SELLS them!  Matthew explains...

Contemporary Sculpture
"Wood, with its trade-mark warmth and innocent beauty doesn’t even have to try; not with all those knots, grains and glorious cracks. Yes, glorious! Cracks are at once the markers of imperfection and a welcome, random release of tension in an otherwise well-ordered reality. Cracks are justification for, and acceptance of, forces we cannot control."

Not only does he accept and celebrate cracks in wood, he also burns it.  Not for heat but for art!  He has burned the surface of his Statue of Liberty to give it texture and patina.  He has developed a method of using fire to hollow sculptures which he used on a life size Liberty Bell and a 10' tall Easter Island Moai.

Where can you see his works?  Well, there are 4,972 photos of just about every angle and every type of wood sculpture you have ever seen in his new photo gallery at Timeless Sculptures.

Of all the tools you may have considered...

This incredible piece of furniture is a single piece of wood!  The smooth lines and aesthetic curves were achieved not with carpentry or cabinetry but rather by the creative use of a sawmill and some steam bending fixtures.

Other contemporary furniture my Mike Jarvi can be seen in the slideshow on his website at http://www.mikejarvi.com/

Watch Mike Jarvi create his wooden masterpiece, the Jarvi Bench, in this 15 minute video.
